My computer has been broken for about 3 months now, and I haven't had internet at home for six. At this point, I need a computer, but figured I didn't really need a superfancy one, since I have gone all of this time without it.
Apple, you were calling my name, man, but in the end, I JUST DIDN'T WANT TO SPEND THE MONEY.
And then, there it was. The option that made perfect sense in a completely bizarre way. The One Laptop Per Child laptop. Sure, it looks like a kids toy, has a tiny keyboard (for little kid hands), has no memory, no CD or DVD drive and is a little slow, but damn. It costs $400, is super simple (which I see as a plus), runs on Linux, is totally programmable, has everything I need (not necessarily everything I want, but hey) and, the best part is that I get to send one to some kid in a developing country for him or her to learn with. If that is not cool, I don't know what is.
Now I just have to get in line on Nov. 12th when they are rolling this thing out. I'm not sure how many people will want to play, but I am assuming it is a lot. But, I have a head start--I am getting my browser-refresh finger ready. (:
Oh yeah, and Mom: Can this be part of my envelope?

Dude,
While I support your cause, I do not know why you do not get a mac mini? If you are still teaching are taking limited classes at a school, then you can get one for around $579.00 before taxes. That is going to out perform this kids laptop for about a $200 difference. Then again, I work for apple so I am biased . . . have a great day!
